New reader from the HTC HD2 For All

You like reading? I know I love to read! Mostly books for clinical psychology, but hey who’s to judge? What I hate is finding an ereader for a windows mobile device. Beyond adobe pdf (with some limited settings and downright tweaking), its alright, but not the best. HTC has released an ebook reader apart of the sense package from the HD2. I liked it, but I hated the bloat of the htc sense. Well thanks to ppcgeeks mod and rom chef, Mr. X, has made a nice cab so if you don’t want or need to install a sense rom to get the ereader, you don’t have to. Just take a look at the download and test it out. The ereader can read epub which is a lot of books, so have fun!

Android…a go on htc touch pro 2

December 2009 is something that people with HTC touch pro 2s won’t forget. Toward the end of the month, we got to receive first builds of android 2.0.1 on the device. It was crude, there wasn’t much working, but time pressed on. GSM received a lot of development, but there was no love for the CDMA faithful (which are quite large in America). However, new gains have been made to get data, sound, and a whole slew of other things to work on the touch pro 2. Why don’t you give it a fair checkout by hitting the links below?

Apple, Legal Threats to Disrupt Competition?

Fortune magazine reports a new research note from Oppenheimer & Co. Yair Reiner claiming in January, Apple began having discussions expressing their discern with phone developers infringing on their intellectual property.

Starting in January, Apple launched a series of C-Level discussions with tier-1 handset makers to underscore its growing displeasure at seeing its iPhone-related IP [intellectual property] infringed. The lawsuit filed against HTC thus appears to be Apple's way of putting a public, lawyered-up exclamation point on a series of blunt conversations that have been occurring behind closed doors.
Our checks also suggest that these warning shots are meaningfully disrupting the development roadmaps for would-be iPhone killers. Rival software and hardware teams are going back to the drawing board to look for work-arounds. Lawyers are redoubling efforts to gauge potential defensive and offensive responses. And strategy teams are working to chart OS strategies that are better hedged.

I know you’re thinking the same thing I’m thinking in lieu of the HTC/Nokia lawsuits. Discuss

Have a big question mark as to what a cookie cutter app is? Well a cookie cutter app is a glorified application that links to a specific website or merely downloads some information from an RSS feed. In the apple app store, there are a panoply of apps; to include cookie cutter apps. But Apple doesn’t want this anymore. According to Apple:

Apple wants iPhone apps to be superior to Web experiences because they are extremely sticky and drive people specifically to buy the iPhone over competing smartphone platforms. Apps that are too simple or largely indistinguishable from the Web, other apps or particularly other apps on other platforms send the message to end users that the iPhone app ecosystem might not be particularly special.

No more basic templates, no more apps that merely redirect to websites. Good idea or bad idea? Discuss

Two years, rom chef and creator of a myriad of programs for the windows mobile platform, Julian Schapman, launched an idea that would improve the experience of windows mobile as we know it. He created a video to showcase that work known as touchxperience. Touchxperience initially boasted a variety of things that many contended to be almost impossible for windows mobile at that time. Further, only the best windows mobile handsets (which were at the time, the touch diamond, touch pro and the touch hd) would be capable of running the touchxperience rom (I say rom because this was the initial plan because the program was so exhaustive on several windows mobile resources). The testing period, which was initially set for a winter 08-09 release began to be plagued with several problems that neither the developer or the beta testers could even begin to fathom. Seemingly, everytime that Schapman gave a deadline, something bizarre happened on his end. As a response, beta testers because frustrated and questioned the motives of Schapman. After the touchxperience site was completely ransacked by adware and bots that promoted porn and other illegal information, all involved with the beta testing team began to give up hope that touchxperience would be the next piece of vaporware never to see the light of day. Though, in this, the beta testers couldn't complain as we received 9 programs that were to be bundled with the initial rom for touchxperience. But still, none of the programs added up to touchxperience. And with the forum going down sometime in Fall 2009, that solidifed one thing for us - it was dead. The anticipation we had for touchxperience and the two years of hoping was all for naught. Many of us moved on to different handsets (most were of course windows mobile handsets). But each of us realized a project that would never see the light of day was the fate of touchxperience...OR WAS IT?

Out of the blue, Schapman emailed all members of the beta testing team to check out the new evolution of touchxperience. And many that received the information posted it to several sites including pocketnow.com. Throughout the comments of the new touchxperience, many were skeptical that this would be the same swan song. However, Schapman communicated largely to xda-developers as well as us being in the beta testing team. Personally, I was given a new zeal of hope that was solidified today. My email for the touchxperience beta was here and I was completely ecstatic.

There are a variety of changes that were made to the touchxperience initiative that was once thought of two years ago. I should clarify this point, the changes weren’t huge in that some ideas were scrapped, but the ideas were refined and intuitive. For example, the primary goal of the touchxperience was to permeate all that is windows mobile. From the menu system, to file explorer and even text messaging, this was the domain of touchxperience. Currently, this beta of touchxperience serves as an overlay activated from the start menu. But much of the touchxperience initiative of being a large overlay to windows mobile still exists.  For example, many of the menus accessed from the start menu have a sub menu inside of touchxperience. The text messaging menu is also apart of this massive program. In many ways, the program blows me away like the initial sense ui blew me away. The touchxperience menus can be customizable and at start users are given a very nice “live” wallpaper from the notable htc sense 2.5 suite. But each menu can have its own background or solid color.

I am still thumbing through touchxperience as we speak and so far I am extremely impressed with the work. Later I will show images/video and instructions of how to get this software, but definitely this software impresses me currently.

Windows Mobile 6.5 seemed to be all of the rage when it was first released (well it was a mixed bag in the eyes of reviewers) and everyone wanted it. The updates for many devices to this windows version was only bequeathed to the most current devices. Time has passed, and every carrier with a touch pro 2 had a windows mobile 6.5 rom…except Sprint. For months, customers waited, and waited, and waited. And finally…Sprint began to work. Speculation was given into how the rom could behave based on a unique sprint exchange customers had, in which Sprint said drivers and the full experience would drastically be improved. So far, the rom has 6.5 21210 and HTC Sense 2.1(actually a very old build of sense without weather animation). Take a look at the pics and hopefully the information is dated, because if it is not, well Sprint customers may feel cheated. Download the rom at your discretion, it is buggy.

So a lot has been happening in all that is Nokia lately at least for the S60 platform that leaves the Series 40 platform with very little updates. In fact, the future and the intention of the Series 40 platform has been in question. Rest assured, however, the Series 40 platform will get some greater things. Nokia suggests that a new touch experience is coming for the Series 40 this year, as well as dual sim devices. No word on details, but keep glued here. We will report it when it comes available.

BBLeaks have been posting some interesting information about a new Blackberry Storm that leave users a bit intrigued. The most notable change is a slider design, which would ideally do away with just a software keyboard as the primary way to type information. Now, BBLeaks have posted a shot that may be the next Blackberry OS and users that were keen on pocket pcs back in 2005 will notice it looks very familiar.

Netflix on Iphone? Maybe so says Netflix

Netflix, the originator of home dvd delivery services has been making waves recently. From streaming movies online and onto game consoles, the company looks as if the next device that will offer the service is on the apple iphone. A single question survey was emailed to users to gauge interest in a possible Netflix app. This sounds wonderful, right? Well the news comes at some sacrifices. The biggest sacrifice is no 3g – meaning users will have to use a wifi router when viewing. Users will not be able to download movies either. Even if this may seem like a hollow victory, there is a large implication to extending the application to the new iPad. Stay tuned to find out more.

RIM plans to change the game with context?

Recent blackberry webinar graced the participants with an interesting new "home" page running on a Storm OS. While no indication has been given that OS 6.0 will transform into this, crackberry and berry scoop have indicated that there is a small possibility that the image could be an interim shot for BBOS 6.0. Time will tell about how this will transform, but thus far, it looks very familiar isn't that right htc?
